Medical Assistant (MA) Scope of Work & Qualifications

The Medical Assistant (MA) will work under the supervision of the nurse. Assists with clinical procedures and physical examinations (if applicable) such as Pre-placement, Fire Brigade, DOT, Respiratory Evaluations, and Fitness for Duty. Responsibilities include:   

Essential Elements  

  • Perform diagnostic testing such as vital signs, EKG, audiogram, pulmonary function test, vision acuity, and respirator fit testing  
  • Perform Wellness Testing (body fat, aerobic capacity assessment, upper body strength, etc.) and counseling (diet, exercise, tobacco cessation, etc.)  
  • Perform laboratory duties such as phlebotomy, urinalysis, cholesterol and blood glucose testing, and immunization  
  • Administer first-aid and supervised medical treatment such as suture removal, ear/eye irrigation, apply splint and dressing as directed by nurse  
  • Calibrate medical equipment at appropriate interval  
  • Perform sterilization of medical equipment  

 

General Administrative Duties  

  • First responsible in performing clinic front-office work  
  • Supplies – MA is responsible for ordering and maintaining medical & office supplies  
  • Billing – Process invoices and forward to WorkCare or WorkCare’s Comp Carrier after being reviewed and approved by nurse  

 

Worker’s Compensation Case Management  

  • Assist in managing worker’s compensation case management program

  • Upkeep of CMA certification requirements, First-Aid CPR  
  • Spirometry Testing and Respiratory Surveillance training Program

  • NIOSH and CAOHC certifications not included
