Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant (PA) Scope of Work & Qualifications

This position serves as an integral part of the daily operations at assigned on-site occupational health clinic and uses independent decision-making skills to resolve problems and treat patients. Additional responsibilities include performing regulatory testing, injury/illness care, and wellness education for employees.  

Essential Functions 

  • Performs duties assigned and authorized by supervising physician/Medical Director. 
  • Ensures all safety and environmental guidelines are followed without deviation. 
  • Treats injured and ill employees, performs accurate health assessments in patients who present for treatment, and initiates appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic measures according to protocol and within his/her written agreement with the supervising physician. 
  • Conducts routine physical examinations, periodic job-related surveillance exams, epidemiological follow-ups and routine screenings. 
  • Conducts physical examinations and systematically documents findings 
  • Works with the RN to advise and educate workers about hazards in the workplace and their health effects. 
  • Provides clinical support to employees in monitoring health problems, offers medical counseling and referrals to medical or surgical services. 
  • Coordinates services such as cholesterol and blood pressure, promotes the preventive medicine program to increase the health and wellbeing of the work force and to protect the work force from disease and injury. 
  • Expedites and evaluates Worker’s Compensation and lost time injury issues. 
  • Reviews employee immunization records to ensure the employee is updated on all immunizations as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). 
  • Provides healthcare services to patients under the direction and responsibility of a physician. 
  • Evaluates and treats employees with injuries and/or illnesses and refers them to a physician or hospital as necessary. Provides follow-up treatment as needed. 
  • Performs suturing for uncomplicated, non-facial lacerations. 
  • Diagnoses and manages acute and chronic diseases and/or conditions. Administers or orders diagnostic tests such as x-ray and laboratory tests and interprets test results. 
  • Examines patients and administers immediate advanced life support and stabilization. 
  • Responds to emergency situations and directs operations accordingly. Provides urgent/emergency care that may include medical procedures. Writes appropriate orders including those for narcotics, stimulant and depressant drugs. 
  • Assists in planning emergency evacuation procedures. Supervises the evacuation of patients as needed to assure continuous treatment en route to other medical facilities. 
  • Obtains medical histories and performs pre-employment physicals. 
  • Supervises paramedical personnel in performing routine and emergency medical services; supervises, directs and trains First Aid/Rescue teams. 
  • Administers ongoing programs of preventative medicine including tetanus and flu inoculations, and blood pressure screening; advises employees on methods of disease prevention and educates and counsels individuals to promote positive health behaviors and self-care skill. Assists in administering drug and alcohol programs. 
  • Reviews the ongoing adequacy of medical care; recommends the need for supplementary medical support staff and the purchase of medical equipment and supplies/medications as outlined in medical directives. 
  • Assists in the coordination of activities to prevent accidents. 
  • Assists in the education and training of medical support personnel, including selection, training, development, and performance monitoring. Serves as a preceptor for nurse practitioner students and/or allied healthcare students. 
  • Maintains and prepares medical reports in accordance with applicable worker’s compensation claim requirements. Participates in worker’s compensation insurance claims reviews as required. 

 

Qualifications and Experience 

  • Master’s degree in medical science from an accredited educational institution and current License as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in the State of Tennessee required. 
  • 3+ years of experience as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant is preferred for this position. Possesses strong organizational skills, with the ability to coordinate and prioritize projects. Must have the ability to adapt to changes as they occur. 
  • First Aid, CPR, and AED certified 
  • If needed, NIOSH, CAOHC, DOT Drug, and Alcohol testing 
  • Proficient in Windows operating system environment, Adobe Professional, Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and learn other software as needed
