Ergonomic Adjustments Help Relieve Arthritis

May 13, 2025

Supporting team members with arthritis through proactive ergonomic interventions helps reduce discomfort and improve productivity.

An estimated 1 in 4 U.S. adults have arthritis, a leading cause of disability, according to Healthy People 2030. Symptoms include joint pain, stiffness, swelling, and limited range of motion. Ergonomic adjustments help relieve discomfort and improve flexibility so employees with arthritis can remain productive.

Here’s a real-life example of how WorkCare’s ergonomic coaching made a difference: A female employee with arthritis experienced joint pain and reduced grip strength, making it difficult to grip an essential tool or even hold her coffee cup.

  1. An injury prevention specialist conducted a root-cause analysis to review physical demands of the job, the employee’s health history, and the potential need for physical and/or ergonomic adjustments.
  1. The tool was replaced with a modified version designed to help relieve musculoskeletal discomfort.
  1. The employee was instructed on ways to warm up and modify behaviors to nourish supporting tissues affected by arthritis.

The result? The employee regained full strength in her hand without disabling pain. This is just one of the success stories from the Total Employee Health program WorkCare implemented for the global power management company featured in our recent webinar and blog
