Industrial Injury Prevention Specialists (IIPS) Scope of Work and Qualifications 

Industrial Injury Prevention Specialists (IIPS) are healthcare professionals who provide a proactive approach to preventing and managing workplace injuries and illnesses. Services provided by IIPS include prevention, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic interventions, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. IIPS work under the direction of physicians. A scope of work for an IIPS includes but is not limited to:   

  • Provide employees with rapid first aid and emergency care (within scope of practice) 
  • Provide instructions on warmup, cool down, proper material handling, functional assessments, and proven pain management techniques  
  • Provide episodic care for minor medical issues, medical consultation, and recommendations according to care guidelines, policies, and procedures in collaboration with the WorkCare CMD   
  • Coordinate care with other WorkCare programs 
  • Use physician escalation services, as needed  
  • Provide evidence-based practice and health promotion with professionalism and a patient-centered approach  
  • Develop and provide injury prevention through demonstration, education, and ergonomic evaluation  
  • Assist with new-hire exams, return-to-work and fitness-for-duty assessments, and transitional work plans before an employee’s return to work, as needed, within the scope of practice, and as supported by the CMD  
  • Modify interventions to progress the employee, as directed by the CMD, and ensure employee safety and comfort   
  • Maintain frequent communication with the WorkCare CMD and WorkCare supervisor regarding all clinical issues and client requests  
  • Support psychosocial strategies, referral to employee assistance programs (EAP), and support case management efforts, as needed 
  • Help employees prevent injuries by maintaining proper alignment, correcting movement, and managing pain  
  • Develop job-specific agility routines and related programs  
  • Provide on-the-job coaching to help workers achieve and maintain physical fitness  
  • Perform ergonomic assessments, and/or other employee intervention programs as implemented  
  • Support health fairs and other wellness initiatives such as encouraging healthy lifestyles by coaching employees about nutrition, fitness, sleep hygiene and stress management  
  • Obtain data (such as biometrics) related to wellness interventions and providing wellness checks, obesity weigh-ins, blood pressure checks, etc.  
  • Facilitate use of available company resources such as fitness centers and health risk appraisals 
  • Periodically report to client and WorkCare management  
  • Support medical surveillance exams such as audiograms, vision tests, pulmonary function, respirator fit testing, and DOT testing requirements as needed, and feasible with available or procured equipment, in line with the scope of practice and as supported by the WorkCare CMD  
  • Provide post-accident, pre-employment, for-cause, and random drug testing in line with the scope of practice and as supported by the WorkCare CMD or Medical Review Officer   
  • Assist the CMD with healthcare administration work, such as developing protocols and policies  
  • Collaborate with the WorkCare CMD to support clinical issues and Company requests  
  • Contribute insight to incident reports and tracking of injury and clinic utilization data  
  • Participate in emergency response team activities, drills, and training  
  • Maintain data, OSHA-300 log, and the clinic encounter data entry process supported by clinic software or electronic medical records (EMR) system  
  • Order and maintain supplies to ensure that the clinic is appropriately stocked  
  • Participate in the general flow of clinic operations (answering phones, checking mail, maintaining medical records, filing, copying charts) in collaboration with client staff  
  • Assist with noise sampling, dust sampling, and fire extinguisher maintenance  
  • Provide common, pre-packaged over the counter (OTC) medicine to employees for episodic care  

 

Preferred Credentials/Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in athletic training, exercise science, physical education, or related field with at least three years of related experience  
  • Educated, trained and evaluated in five major practice domains: 1) Injury and illness prevention and wellness promotion; 2) Examination, assessment, and diagnosis; 3) Immediate and emergency care; 4) Therapeutic intervention; and 5) Healthcare administration and professional responsibility as NATABOC-certified athletic trainer  
  • Board of Medicine Licensed Athletic Trainer within the state of practice (where applicable) in good standing  
  • CPR certification  
  • DOT, Drug & Alcohol Certification if applicable to project, will be obtained as needed  
  • Proficient in basic office software applications
